DAP For Dogs Can Ease Stress In Our Pets When Moving House

There can be few more stressful times than when we’re moving house. Stress levels rise to even greater heights when there’s a pet dog or cat involved. Every step in the moving process becomes more complicated when ther’s a pet involved.
Moving home is such a stressful time but please bear in mind that it’s just as bad for the dog !

Preparing to leave your old property can be as worrying as the move itself. Familiar settings are disrupted as furniture gets moved and belongings are packed away. Your dog will wonder who all these strangers are (potential buyers, inspectors, movers, etc.) and what’s happening to his familiar “territory” (changed location of sleeping places etc.)

DAP for dogs can help your dog to get through this worrying period. Its calming properties van bring a sense of calm and relaxation to dogs that have become stressed out by all the strange happenings during the house move.

Find a small room that can be given over to your pet and clear as much of the furniture and belongings out as possible so that when the actual move gets under way there will not be too much traffic in and out of that room. Place their regular bed, familiar toys, food and water bowls into the room. By doing this, they will have a reassuring, but rather bare, environment to spend their time in whilst all hell is let loose around them. It would also be a good idea to put a big notice on the door telling the removals men to keep out, this would reduce the danger of the dog escaping and then panicking and running away in the chaos of a typical house move.

And one last point, don’t drive away from the old house without rescuing the dog from the spare room !

These products distribute a scent that can be detected by dogs into the air around the pet. It cannot be detected by humans, but it seems to have a unique effect on dogs. It can be bought in three different styles:

- Impregnated into a plastic type collar that is worn by the dog. The collar has a life of about one month
- As a plug-n diffuser just like those used for air fresheners. The refill lasts for around a month.
- As an aerosol which can be sprayed onto bedding or into kennels or dog crates

What does it do ?

Animal behaviour is affected by natural pheromones throughout the world. Dogs with their sensitive noses are known to respond to them, and DAP uses this effect in a useful way. This DAP product is a manufactured compound that is designed to mimic the natural pheromones produced by a lactating bitch. It serves to calm them whilst they are exploring the big new world. It has been found that DAP works on both young and adult dogs, helping to comfort and reassure them in stressful or fearful situations.

What are its uses ?

Fear and stress in our dogs can be eased by using this product. Puppies can be particularly stressed by a move to a new home as well as the worries of new experiences such as meeting new dogs, traffic, trains etc etc. Even older dogs can suffer from separation anxiety when their owner needs to leave the house without the dog. Dogs left alone are likely to have unwanted behaviour such as chewing or scratching, whining or barking, scratching or some other stressful behaviour. A scientific report from The Veterinary Record in 2005 shows that DAP can help to relieve these problems*.

Are there any side effects?

Dog Appeasing Pheromone is not a drug and it appears to be perfectly safe to use . It is not however a magic solution to every problem encountered in worried or stressed dogs. Occasionally it doesn’t seem to make any difference to a stress related problem and at other times it works amazingly well. It’s likely that DAP will always make some difference to the stress levels in our dogs but if those levels are very high then it’s likely that some other methods of stress relief will need to be incorporated into the treatment regime. Stressed dogs can be helped with a number of other techniques. These are often not obvious to the layman, and so specialist advice should be sought if progress is not being made.

Where is Dap sold ?

DAP will be on sale at most veterinary practices. Some larger pet shops will hold stocks but the best place to buy DAP (and a source of lots more information) is from a specialist website such as DAP for dogs.
